The second AuSable Valley wrestler was set to take the mat as Kenny Rivers was matched up against No. 2 seed Marcus Ramundo at 285-lbs. in the 120th and final match of the opening round of the NYSPHSAA wrestling tournament.
Rivers stuffed an early takedown attempt by Ramundo 10 seconds into the first period, but 10 seconds later Ramundo connected on a double to score the first two points of the match. Rivers had an escape at the 59 second mark, and the two remained standing until Ramundo was able to convert on a cradle for a takedown for a 4-1 lead 1:21 into the quarter. As Rivers tried for another escape, Ramundo was able to take him back down at the 1:40 mark onto his back, where he recorded the pin six seconds later.
The next AVCS match will be a wrestleback between Dylan Baker and Joe Dillon at 125-lbs. Wrestlebacks begin after the quarterfinal round, which is just about to begin.
