Ballston Spa needed overtime to defeat Averill Park 4-3, and Guilderland edged Saratoga Springs 3-2 in Tuesday's Suburban Council boys soccer action.
Averill Park (0-10-0) had a 3-1 lead on Ballston Spa before Connor Preece went to work. Preece struck for two goals in the final eight minutes of the second half and added a goal on an overtime penalty kick to propel the Scotties (5-4-1) to victory. It was Preece's second consecutive hat trick, as he also tallied three times in Ballston Spa's 4-0 victory over Shaker Monday.
Averill Park built a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Nick Hess and Dylan Larkin. Ballston Spa got one back before halftime when Nick Comiskey scored off a Preece assist, but Noah Madden tallied early in the second half to re-establish Averill Park's two-goal cushion.
Ballston Spa goaltender Evan Mendez made 10 saves to keep his team in the game. Averill Park netminder Brandon Westfall also stopped 10 shots.
In Saratoga Springs, Guilderland (6-2-2) got a goal from Nick Iuorno with 20 seconds left in regulation to defeat the Blue Streaks (3-7-0).
Morgan Smith scored in the fourth minute of the first half to get Saratoga on the board first. Guilderland tied it in the 25th minute on Vito Mesiti's goal and took a 2-1 lead on a penalty kick by Iuorno 13 minutes into the second half. Smith knotted the score at 2 when his free kick deflected off a Guilderland defender into the net.
Saratoga Springs moved ahead of Niskayuna in the North Division standings with Tuesday's 1-1 tie against Guilderland and Niskayuna's 2-1 loss to Bethlehem.
Guilderland (7-1-2) became only the third team to score a goal against Saratoga (7-1-2) when Laurie Knapp struck in the second half off a Marissa Cubillos pass. Ellery Bianco tied the game for the Blue Streaks 10 minutes later, and neither team scored again.
Lady Dutch goaltender Jenna Cubello had 10 saves, while Liz Rogan stopped six shots for the Blue Streaks.
Behind an impressive performance from Katherine Orr, the Shenendehowa girls swim team defeated Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 102-76 in Tuesday's duel meet in Clifton Park.
Orr won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races, and she was part of one of two winning relay teams for the Plainswomen. Olivia Samson finished first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle, while Julia Samson (50-yard freestyle) and Olivia Normandin (100-yard backstroke) added individual wins.
Lauren Rabideau took first place in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke for BH-BL. Lauren Katz finished first in the diving competition.
In other duel meet action Tuesday, Saratoga Springs topped Guilderville 101-81 and Ballston Spa defeated Queensbury 98-83.
In Voorheesville, Caroline Conboy led Saratoga Springs with victories in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. Katie Barlok (200-yard freestyle), Melissa Boyd (diving), Cece Carsky-Bush (100-yard butterfly), Mallory Gannon (500-yard freestyle) and Elle Kolakowski (100-yard backstroke) also won individual events for the Blue Streaks.
Jenna Bickel (50-yard freestyle) and Mackenzie Cietek (100-yard freestyle) scored victories for Guilderville.
In Ballston Spa, Karly Haraden won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke for the Scotties in their meet against Queensbury. Alyssa Gardiner (200-yard individual medley), Stefani Schmitz (100-yard freestyle) and sisters Addison (diving) and Paris Walkowiak (100-yard butterfly) also won their events.
