An opportunistic play by Zach Stryker helped the Bethlehem boys soccer team pull out a 1-0 overtime win over Ballston Spa in Saturday's Suburban Council game.
Ballston Spa goaltender Evan Mendez came out to the top of the penalty box to play a ball sent in by Bethlehem's defense. Stryker stole the ball away from Mendez and shot it into the vacated goal to put the Eagles ahead for good.
Ethan Gunty tried to win the game in regulation for Bethlehem. He had two scoring chances in the second half -- one which hit the crossbar, and another that Mendez pushed aside for one of his several saves.
In other Suburban Council action Saturday, Guilderland handled Niskayuna 3-1, while Saratoga Springs downed Averill Park 8-2.
Penalty kicks dictated the scoring in the first half of the Guilderland-Niskayuna match. Tyler Garrity scored off the first one to put Niskayuna ahead 1-0, but Nick Iuorno put in two penalty kicks to move Guilderland in front. Sam Mohr gave the Dutchmen some insurance with a second half goal.
In Saratoga Springs, Morgan Smith starred for the home team by recording a hat trick and adding an assist. One of Smith's three goals was a 35-yard frozen rope that tucked inside the far post.
Terrence Maydick, Kieran Mottau and Danny Marshall also tallied for the Blue Streaks, who won their second consecutive game after suffering three losses to start the season. Nick Hess tallied twice for Averill Park.
