Skiers at Whiteface have been flocking to the lift line since Thanksgiving, and are hoping a good weekend of winter weather allows them to expand their trail offerings.
While Whiteface Mountain has been open since Nov. 25, the drop in temperatures and forecast for some snow brings a new level of excitement.
“There is not a lot of Mother Nature snow yet, but the cold weather has been ideal for snowmaking,” Jon Lundin of ORDA said. “It’s been a rough opening for everyone in the East, but we have been able to stay open since the Friday after Thanksgiving.”
Lundin said that the colder weather will allow the mountain to expand the offering of trails that they will have open over the New Year’s weekend and into the 2012 portion of the ski season.
“Right now, we have 24 trails and six lifts open,” Lundin said Dec. 28. “With this weather, we are getting there with more trails opening.”
Lundin added that as the mountain has started to come to life, the tourism to the region has continued to increase.
“There are so many things that are available here, and if you go through town this week, it has just been packed,” he said.
