A bill signed into law late last week by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo extends a boater safety course exemption for renters of personal watercraft.
The measure passed the state Legislature in June and was sponsored by Senator Betty Little.
Little says that under the law, anyone renting jet skis or other personal watercraft is not required to take a state-sponsored boater safety certification course.
But the law does require that users of personal watercraft must keep within 2,500 feet of the rental location.
Little says the law is good for business in the Adirondack North Country.
“This is important for marinas and small businesses that rely on the rentals of personal watercraft to stay afloat financially,” she said in an emailed statement, adding that the law is a reasonable exemption that supports recreation and tourism.
