The opening day of the Essex County Fair was officially opened with the dedication of the new cattle barn and some excitement on the track.
In the 10th harness race of the day, a three-horse collision in turn four of the track led to a pair of drivers, Ray Gagnon and Michael Sergi, being taken to the hospital by ambulance. A third driver, Lance LePage, was able to walk away from the incident. No horses were seriously injured in the crash.
During the opening ceremonies, the newest building, used for housing and showing cattle and other livestock, on the grounds was named in honor of Kathy Peck Traverse, who was an annual fixture in the cattle show ring.
“Since she was eight years old, she never let anything stop her from getting her cows to the fair,” Ernie LaPine said during the opening ceremonies. “When she passed away, our fair suffered a huge loss and she will always be with us as we dedicate this building to here.
Following the ceremonies, the newest feature of opening day was held as several Essex County supervisors and other dignitaries took part in a cow milking contest, with Westport Supervisor and agricultural board member Dan Connell taking back his “title,” from Schroon Supervisor Michael Marnell.
