The Niskayuna girls cross country team takes off from the starting line during the Grout Run Oct. 1 in Schenectady’s Central Park. The Silver Warriors placed fourth in the Division I team standings.
Schenectady County runners turned in strong performances at last Saturday’s Grout Run in Schenectady’s Central Park.
Mekeel Christian Academy’s Jacob Urys placed third in the boys Division C race, while Niskayuna’s Niall Williams had a fourth-place finish in the boys Division II race. And on the girls’ side, Niskayuna’s Felicia Sciortino and Shannon Trant had top-10 finishes in Division I, and Mohonasen’s Cara Sherman took ninth place in Division II.
Urys was in a battle with Fonda-Fultonville’s Mike Scott and Rhinebeck’s Johnny Marvin for first place in the Division C race before Scott and Marvin pulled away. Scott won the race with a time of 13:44.58, Marvin finished second with a time of 13:47.27 and Urys fended off Fonda’s Matt Hoffman for third place with a time of 13:59.58.
“It was a good race,” said MCA coach Jim Foster. “I was particularly pleased with his time.”
Ryun and Christopher Murphy added top-20 finishes to help MCA place fifth in the Division C team standings with 120 points. Ryun Murphy placed 14th with a time of 14:44.86, while older brother Christopher finished 16th with a time of 15:01.98.
The boys Division II race featured strong performances from Niskayuna, Mohonasen and Schalmont. Niskayuna placed fourth in the team standings with 96 points, while Mohonasen finished fifth with 157 points. Schalmont followed in sixth place with 180 points.
Williams led Niskayuna with his fourth-place finish in a time of 14:22.00. Andrew Steenburgh (14th place, 15:02.45), Dominick Brion (16th, 15:06.07) and Greg Thomas (26th, 125:40.83) also placed in the top 30 for the Silver Warriors.
Mohonasen had two runners in the top 30 – Kevin Dixon (13th place, 15:00.81) and Dave Cifarelli (30th, 15:49.79). Jeff Budka (19th, 15:26.53) and Jonathan Ricciardi (27th, 15:42.49) made the top 30 for Schalmont.
The Niskayuna girls team placed fourth in the Division I standings with 89 points, 26 points behind third-place Guilderland.
“The kids ran great today,” said Niskayuna girls coach John Sharkey.
Sciortino took seventh place with a time of 16:32.90, while Trant finished eighth with a time of 16”47.41. Danielle Skufca contributed an 11th-place finish with a time of 17:10.39.
Mohonasen didn’t have enough runners to qualify for the girls Division II team standings, but it had a representative in the top-10 in the form of Sherman. The freshman placed ninth with a time of 17:20.55. Junior Allison Thayer finished 22nd with a time of 18:11.06.
Schalmont placed fifth in the Division II girls team standings with 166 points. The Sabres had two runners in the top 30 – Alyssa Alex (17th place, 17:48.23) and Kristin Lancto (26th, 18:21.54).
