The Mt. Pisgah Enhancement Project was honored for its work in modernizing facilties with a Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism Destination Award.
ROOST Board of Directors Chairman Justin Smith presented the Destination Product Award to Pisgah manager Charlie Martin during the Jan. 24 Destination Awards night in Lake Placid. The award is presented to the group or individual who has, through capital investment or public coordination, moved forward with a project (or projects) that positively affects the tourism-related infrastructure in Essex County.
The Mt. Pisgah Enhancement Project is a public-private partnership whose mission is to modernize facilities and increase the use of the Mt. Pisgah Veteran’s Ski Center, which is located within the Essex County portion of the Village of Saranac Lake. The $800,000 project included the installation of a new T-bar lift, construction of a new lift and race building, construction of a paved accessible nature trail around a pond, and construction of several kilometers of multi-use trails for hiking, cross country skiing, and mountain biking. Amenities include a comfortable lodge and ample parking.
NYS Parks awarded the Village a $600,000 grant for the project but $200,000 match was required. This match included donated time, material, and funding coordinated through Friends of Mt. Pisgah and trail building through the coordinated efforts of the Barkeater Trails Alliance, BOCES, and the Village of Saranac Lake, the Junior and Senior Natural Resources and Conservation Class, and NYS Parks and Recreation.
“This project is a true public/private partnership, involving multiple parties who contribute in-kind services, funding, and expertise,” said Smith. “The multi-use and multi-seasonal nature of the project makes it a valuable part of the area’s infrastructure for both residents and for visiting families.”
