The North Warren Cougars recovered from a slow start in a soccer game Sept. 8 to defeat Indian Lake/Long Lake 4-3 on the road.
The victory for the storied Cougar soccer program was a dramatic one.
The winning shot, made within the final minute of the game, was deflected off a defender’s knee and careened past the Indian Lake goalie. The shot culminated a low-lying drive across the middle of the field.
The game began with a burst of offense by Indian Lake, which scored about three minutes into the game with a shot chipped over the Cougar goalie’s head into the corner of the net.
North Warren, however, showed their determination in the first half by fighting back with three unanswered goals. These consecutive scoring drives, Cougar Coach Jason Humiston said, were the result of his players maintaining ball possession and controlling the play.
“They were taking good care of ball, and taking good shots,” he said.
After the first half which ended up with a 3-1 Cougar advantage, Indian Lake regrouped, responding with two goals to tie the game — before the last-minute goal by North Warren.
Humiston said he was pleased with the outcome, but his players have work ahead of them.
“We’ve got to play better defense — we’ve been making mistakes, particularly in the backfield,” He said. “We’ve got to do more with our scoring opportunities, particularly the one-on-ones against the defending goalie, that should have been finished off.”
Humiston said he has a relatively young group, and a number of players have been moved from positions they played last season.
“We’ve got a totally different formation, and it will take some time for the players to adjust,” he said. “But I have a positive outlook regarding this team.”
