Following all the rain that fell this week, the Shaker boys soccer team decided to play its Suburban Council opener against Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Friday inside the Afrim's Soccer Dome on Route 7, rather than its home field.
The Blue Bison made the most of their indoor debut, as they shut out the Spartans 2-0.
Luke Scarchilli gave Shaker (1-0) the lead late in the first half when he redirected Jackson DuMont's corner kick into the Burnt Hills goal. The Spartans (1-1) threatened several times in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but Shaker's back line held firm. Scarchilli then struck for his second goal with three minutes left in regulation to seal the victory.
Tommy Macutek and Eric Mason combined to make three saves in goal to post the shutout for Shaker. Burnt Hills netminder Kurtis Souza stopped six shots.
In other Suburban Council boys soccer action Friday, Shenendehowa handed defending Section II Class AA champion Saratoga Springs a 6-0 loss, while Ballston Spa edged Niskayuna 2-1.
Adam Barlow and Michael Jenkins each scored twice to lead Shen (1-0). Barlow also contributed a pair of assists, while Aaron Lemire and Saamy Teymouri added goals for the Plainsmen.
Saratoga fell to 0-2 on the season.
Hank Deaton curled a long shot into the Ballston Spa goal to give Niskayuna (0-1) a 1-0 lead, but Connor Preece tallied twice in the second half to put the Scotties (2-0) ahead.
In the Western Athletic Conference, Sharon Springs pulled out a 3-1 victory over Mekeel (Schenectady) Christian Friday.
