It’s likely to be another stellar season for North Warren High School’s Cross-Country program, upcounty sports fans are now predicting.
This talented squad is returning intact — not one of the team members graduated in 2010. Also, the squad has gained a new runner that coach Bernie McCann said this week is the best Modified female runner in the league. Among the standouts are Junior Megan Erickson, who qualified in 2009 — as a Freshman — for the NY State championship meet, and Senior Cassie Maday who went to the states in 2008. Also on the team are Sophomore Mallory Wolf, who has been named a league All-Star.
Friday, the girls demonstrated their potential. As the runners were stretching, McCann’s eyes were gleaming as he talked about their accomplishments.
“This morning, Megan Erickson finished 7 and a half tortuous miles in only 55 minutes 20 seconds,” he said. “I’ve never had a boy or girl do that.”
The boys squad, which secured second in the league for 2010, lost two talented runners, Alec Underwood and John Gordon. Moving up to fill their role are Alec’s younger brother Ian underwood, a Sophomore, and Joe Strauss, a Junior. They are joined by two Sapienza brothers: Anthony, a Junior, and Nick, a Freshman.
In recent years, the boys team has enjoyed its share of successes, winning consecutive Adirondack League championships from 2005 through 2007, and a Sectional title in 2007. Every year, the North Warren Cross-Country runners accomplish far greater feats than are expected from a school with such a small enrollment.
