The 2012 Section VII wrestling championships will feature six returning champions and one state champion.

The Section VII wrestling championships will be held at Peru High School Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning with the team introductions at 9:30 a.m. and ending with the championship round at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 per person for the entire event or for finals only.
Defending sectional team champion Peru will host the tournament to crown individual and team champions Saturday, Feb. 11, with wrestling starting at 10 a.m. The Indians have nine of the 15 top seeds in the event (Northern Adirondack has three, Saranac two and Beekmantown one).
The tournament also features four undefeated wrestlers, including Jacob Goddeau, who enters the tournament with a perfect 34-0 record, was a state champion in 2009 and finished fourth in 2010. He is also looking for his fourth sectional title, this year wrestling at 132-lbs.
Goddeau is joined in the bracket by Northern Adirondack’s Kaleb Sample (28-11), Beekmantown’s Tyler Myers (17-21) and Saranac’s Rafael Rivera (6-9).
At 99, Peru’s Ethan Feazelle is the top seed with a 20-8 record, and will be joined by Northern Adirondack’s Austin Trombley (31-4), Beekmantown’s Anthony Cartee (19-19) and Saranac’s Shawn LaGraves (12-16).
Two-time sectional champion Kyler Agoney (30-3) will be the top seed at 106, which will include Northern Adirondack's Rusty Pombrio (24-14), AuSable Valley’s Dylan Baker (15-11) and Beekmantown’s Michael Cartee (17-15).
Max Marte of Peru will be the top seed at 113, and with a record of 23-10, will look to keep the Indians stronghold on a weight that was previously filled by four-time state champion Arik Robinson. Also at 113 will be Beekmantown’s Konner German (19-18), Northern Adirondack’s Brendon Edwards (24-15) and Saranac’s Richard Armstrong (6-9).
At 120, Codie Gillette of Saranac compiled a regular season record of 25-4 to earn the top seed in a division where four of the five wrestlers have 20 wins on the season. He will be joined by Northern Adirondack’s Scott Kellett (22-8), Peru’s Tanner Phillips (20-9), Beekmantown’s Ethan Bacon (21-17) and AuSable Valley’s Dan Papa (4-22).
Peru’s Nick Forget is the top seed at 138 with a 31-3 record, and will advance to the finals where he will face either Northern Adirondack’s Matt Carter (25-12) or Saranac’s Dylan Spellman (2-10).
Noah Phillips will be the top seed for the Indians at 145, coming into the tournament with an unblemished 37-0 record. Those trying to put a mark in the right column against Phillips include Northern Adirondack’s Hunter Carpenter (26-6), Saranac’s Will Marcil (11-11) and Beekmantown’s Casey LeClair (9-14).
Jackson Sunderland will be a top seed for Northern Adirondack at 152, having only lost twice compared to 27 wins. Others in the weight class include Josh Wright of Peru (29-12), Joe Perry of Saranac (19-11), Zackery Myers of Beekmantown (27-12) and Keith Christensen on AuSable Valley (6-14).
Returning sectional champion Justin Kellett enters the tournament with a 37-1 record as the top seed at 160, joined by Beekmantown’s Dylan Peryea (23-8), AuSable Valley’s Kodie Simpson (11-16), Peru’s Caleb Feazelle (19-23) and Saranac’s Nick Charland (2-9).
Peru’s third wrestler to enter the tournament with an undefeated record, two- time returning sectional champion Troy Seymour, is the top seed at 170 with 36 wins on the season. He will face either Beekmantown’s Brandon Defayette (28-9) or Saranac’s James Black (11-19) in the finals.
Northern Adirondack’s Garrett Gero is the top seed at 182 with a 29-11 record, in a bracket that includes Saranac’s Nate Wood (25-7), Beekmantown’s Gage Bourdeau (32-8) and AuSable Valleys Matt LaMere (19-8).
Ben Perry of Saranac is a defending sectional champion and enters the 195 tournament with a perfect 29-0 record which will also be contested by Northern Adirondack’s Dallas Page (14-11), Beekmantown’s Codie LaPlante (10-13), AuSable Valley’s Collin Fuller (4-8) and Peru’s Taylor Avanzato (2-16).
At 220, Luke McKee of Peru is the top seed with a 26-7 record and will be joined in the bracket by Saranac’s Paul Herrera (19-11), Northern Adirondack’s Russell Noel (15-8) and AuSable Valley’s Dustin Drake (2-8).
Two-time sectional champion Hayden Head is the top seed in the heavyweight division of 285, compiling a 2012 record of 35-2. He will be joined by Peru’s Derrick Cumber (27-9), Saranac’s Josh Ryan (18-12) and Northern Adirondack’s Scott Guerin (18-21).
Admission is $5 for all students and adults for the Feb. 11 tournament, with the teams being announced at 9:30 a.m., followed by the opening round at 10 a.m., semifinals at 11 a.m., consolation matches at 12:30 p.m. and championship matches at 2 p.m.
Winners will earn an automatic bid to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s state wrestling championships at the Times Union Center in Albany, set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25.
