The late Maya Angelou once said: “To make a difference is not a matter of accident, a matter of casual occurrence of the tides. People choose to make a difference.” This rings true for all volunteers. Throughout America, the communities in which we live, work and play are better because so many give so selflessly of themselves. They choose to make a difference, and what they do is not nearly as important as the fact that they are simply doing something—something of substance that fills a need. Volunteering to serve on a nonprofit board is a little different. Effective board service is about much more than filling a seat at the table and attaching your name to a cause. more
