INDIAN LAKE | A North Creek man is in custody after breaking into the Stewart’s store in Indian Lake and leading authorities on a pursuit that ended with a scuffle that left a state trooper with minor injuries.
Caelan L'Hommedieu, 22, has been charged with one count of third degree burglary following the incident early last Friday.
More charges are pending, said state police.
After responding to an alarm at the state Route 28 location last Friday at approximately 1:07 a.m., troopers discovered a broken door.
Store surveillance video revealed L'Hommedieu used an axe to gain entry, said state police, who determined he stole two packs of Marlboro Light cigarettes.
A trooper later responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in a parking area on Starbuck Road in Indian Lake.
L'Hommedieu was wearing clothing which fit the description of the suspect in the surveillance video, police said, and was also in possession of Marlboro Light cigarettes.
After being ordered to exit his 2014 Toyota Corolla, L'Hommedieu led the troopers in pursuit south on State Route 28 before troopers terminated the search, which officials said isn’t an uncommon practice when entering villages or populated areas.
Authorities found him at his home on state Route 28, where his vehicle was parked in the driveway.
“L'Hommedieu was placed under arrest and he actively resisted,” said police in a statement on Thursday. “While effecting the arrest of L'Hommedieu, one trooper sustained a broken finger. The trooper was treated at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.”
Authorities said he didn’t appear to be under the influence of alcohol or another substance.
L'Hommedieu was arraigned in the Town of Indian Lake Court and remanded to the Hamilton County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail, $5,000 bond.
